Madrid draw hands Liga crown to Barcelona

FC Barcelona have been crowned Spanish champions after Real Madrid CF drew 1-1 with RCD Espanyol.

The hosts dominated the first period and deservedly took the lead when Christian Stuani rifled into the net after a deep corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble. The lively forward was denied a second by Diego López before half-time.With the Merengues having two games left, Barcelona's lead is an unassailable seven points heading into their weekend Liga engagement with third-placed Club Atlético de Madrid.

Madrid, aided by substitute Cristiano Ronaldo, equalised just shy of the hour, Gonzalo Higuaín meeting Luka Modric's free-kick with the deftest of headers. Both goalkeepers made important saves thereafter, but the spoils were shared. Madrid's attention now switches to Friday's Copa del Rey final against Atlético.

Bottom side RCD Mallorca's chances of survival receded further with a 2-1 defeat by Athletic Club, a match in which the strugglers had Andreu Fontàs and Joaquín Navarro Jiménez dismissed. RC Deportivo La Coruña are two points adrift of safety after succumbing to Real Valladolid CF, while CA Osasuna moved four clear of danger as Alejandro Arribas' goal sunk Getafe CF.

Lampard breaks Chelsea goal record in Villa win

Frank Lampard moved to the top of Chelsea FC's all-time leading scorers' list courtesy of a double as the Blues recovered from a goal down to win 2-1 at Aston Villa FC.

The England midfielder, who moved to the Stamford Bridge club from West Ham United FC in 2001, surpassed Bobby Tambling's mark of 202 goals with his second of the match two minutes from time. The victory all but assures Rafael Benítez's side of a top-four finish and with it UEFA Champions League football next season. 

Lampard said: "Not much beats Munich because that was amazing for the team and the club, but personally it is another great day and I am really pleased. I'm delighted. Bobby's a great man. I was pleased to level, but to go on and break the record was amazing."

Villa took a surprise 14th-minute lead through Christian Benteke's 19th goal of an impressive debut Premier League campaign. Brad Guzan made a string of saves to deny Chelsea a leveller before Ramires (45) received a second yellow card for a high challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Benteke went from hero to villain when he was dismissed on 58 minutes – also for a second bookable offence – and with the numbers even it took the Blues just three minutes to restore parity, Lampard cutting in from the right and scoring with his left foot from the edge of the area.

Then, with time ebbing away, Lampard tucked in his 203rd Chelsea goal from point-blank range after good work by Eden Hazard. "It is a fantastic achievement, I'm really pleased for him," said Benítez. "To score the amount of goals that he has is amazing."

In what will be a concern for Chelsea ahead of the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday against SL Benfica, John Terry and Hazard were injured at Villa Park, the former being replaced by Branislav Ivanović with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Vidic hails Dortmund and Bayern

Nemanja Vidic has praised German duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund following their progression to the UEFA Champions League final.

Dortmund edged past Real Madrid to seal their place in the Wembley showpiece, while Bayern sent shockwaves around Europe with their 7-0 aggregate demolition of Barcelona in the last four.

And Vidic believes both teams fully deserve to have progressed to the final after some high-octane showings, hinting that United should adopt a similar approach to ensure success in Europe.

“Credit to Bayern. I think they play very good football,” he told MUTV.

“They play as a team and they closed down the Barcelona players very quickly, going in groups. It’s hard to play against these kind of teams.

“Dortmund played against Madrid in a similar way to show this is the tendency in Germany football.

“I think it’s something we should look at. Maybe this is the way other teams have to improve. Over a few years, people were watching Barcelona and saying this is how you should play.

“If you look at Dortmund and Bayern now, you see that they work as a team and individuals and this is why they are having success.”

The Serbia international went on to bemoan his side’s failure to progress beyond the last 16 in this season’s competition, but suggested Sir Alex Ferguson’s men had still enjoyed a successful season.

“It’s hard to watch these kind of games as you know maybe we could be there,” he added.

“But I think, at the end of the day, we should be satisfied with our season. We won the title, which was our priority this season, but we he hoped to do better in the FA Cup and Champions League.

“But this is life, this is football. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win.”
