Chelsea's Mata talks up Basel qualities

Chelsea FC's Juan Mata has called on his team-mates to be wary of complacency ahead of their UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against FC Basel 1893 on Thursday.

The Blues welcome the Swiss Super League leaders to Stamford Bridge protecting a slender 2-1 lead after David Luiz's added-time free-kick decided the teams' first meeting last week. Midfielder Mata was keen to point out that his side still have work to do if they are to reach the showpiece in Amsterdam on 15 May.

"Scoring two goals away is always very good when you're playing in Europe, but we know we have to fight to get to the final," he said. "We got a great result in Switzerland, but now we have to play another 90 minutes. I'm sure they are not going to give up. They are a team that will fight until the end, like they did in their stadium, so it will be tough for sure."

Chelsea enter the game bidding to add their name to an illustrious list and become only the fourth club to win all three major UEFA trophies. If the history books are anything to go by, Mata and Chelsea have good reason to be positive. Rafael Benítez's men approach the match unbeaten in west London in 12 European encounters and have never lost at home in seven UEFA Europa League and UEFA Cup outings.

"After winning the Champions League last season, we now have the chance to be in another final," said the 25-year-old. "We are trying to win another trophy, which will be new for the club. It means a lot – for the club, for the players, for the supporters."

The Spanish international has been in scintillating form this term, scoring 18 goals in all competitions. If he features against Basel, it will be his 63rd appearance for club and country since returning from a packed summer schedule that included UEFA EURO 2012 and the London Olympics.

However, he was quick to stress that tiredness is never an issue for him. "I just try to be fit, every weekend, every game, because I really like to play," he said. "Since I came here, it's true that I have played a lot of games, but I enjoy it. As a footballer, I really like to train, I really like to play and I always want to play as many games as I can. I just want to carry on as I'm doing."

Neither side had an easy ride in their respective semi-final ties, with Fenerbahçe SK and FC Basel 1893 both putting up a strong case during the course of Thursday's second legs. Chelsea eventually beat Basel 3-1 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate, with Benfica 3-2 overall victors despite last week's 1-0 defeat in Istanbul. Both teams started their 2012/13 European campaigns in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The Blues are now one game away from becoming only the fourth club to count all three of the European Champion Clubs' Cup, UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup on their roll of honour. They will follow in the footsteps of Juventus, AFC Ajax and FC Bayern München should they beat Benfica.

The fourth UEFA Europa League final will take place at the Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday 15 May, with kick-off at 20.45CET. Benfica are the nominal home team following last month's draw in Nyon.

Chelsea won both legs of last season's UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie on their way to lifting the trophy, the sole occasion the two sides have met competitively. Salomon Kalou scored the only goal at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, before a Frank Lampard penalty and a late strike from Raul Meireles (who was also in the Fenerbahçe team Benfica overcame in the semis) helped secure a 2-1 second-leg success against the Eagles, who had Maxi Pereira sent off.

Chelsea CLose To Hat-trick

Chelsea FC are one win away from joining an illustrious list of clubs to have won all three of UEFA's major club competitions. The Blues, who were crowned European champions for the first time last season, will add the UEFA Europa League to their roll of honour should they beat SL Benfica at the Amsterdam ArenA on 15 May. The first continental silverware in the Stamford Bridge trophy cabinet was the 1971 European Cup Winners' Cup, a prize they also collected in 1998. Only three teams have lifted each of the European Champion Clubs' Cup, UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. UEFA.com recounts the elite trio's distinguished forays into Europe. AFC Ajax European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1971, 1972, 1973, 1995 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League: 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup: 1987 Using the template set by coach Rinus Michels and inspired by Johan Cruyff, Ajax's brand of 'total football' overwhelmed opponents at the start of the 1970s. They picked up the European Cup three times, the latter two coming under Romanian Ştefan Kovács, though it was not until Cruyff returned as coach and led a side to Cup Winners' Cup glory in 1987 that they increased their European haul. Marco van Basten scored the only goal against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in that Athens final, yet it was a new generation that Louis van Gaal steered to UEFA Cup success in 1992, edging out Torino FC in the two-legged final on away goals. Many of that team were still in place three years later when Ajax defied the odds to win the UEFA Champions League. FC Bayern München European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League: 1996 European Cup Winners' Cup: 1967 Bayern carried on from where Ajax left off. Restricted to their 1967 Cup Winners' Cup triumph against Rangers FC until the mid-1970s, Bayern then ran riot. A side driven by Uli Hoeness and Franz Beckenbauer landed three successive continental titles courtesy of final victories against Club Atlético de Madrid – 4-0 in a replay – Leeds United AFC and AS Saint-Etienne. However, the Bavarians did not get their hands on that most coveted prize again until 2001, when they had Oliver Kahn to thank for a heroic display in the penalty shoot-out against Valencia CF. By that time, they had already completed their European 'treble' with a two-legged defeat of FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the UEFA Cup showpiece. Another European Cup has been tantalisingly close in recent years, not least when Chelsea denied them at their own stadium last term. Juventus European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1985, 1996 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League: 1977, 1990, 1993 European Cup Winners' Cup: 1984 Last out of the starting blocks, Juventus's name was first engraved on a European trophy in 1977 when they beat Athletic Club to claim the UEFA Cup. A side containing the likes of Paolo Rossi, Michel Platini and Zbigniew Boniek went on to taste more glory in the coming years. The Bianconeri fell at the final hurdle in the 1983 European Cup but bounced back to lift the Cup Winners' Cup the following campaign. They then won the 1985 European Cup, though this was a triumph overshadowed by the Heysel Stadium tragedy that unfolded at the final against Liverpool FC. Two more UEFA Cups were already under lock and key by the time they reached the European summit once more, wrestling Ajax's crown off them with a penalties victory against the Amsterdam team in the 1996 showpiece.

SL Benfica and Chelsea FC have confirmed details of their media open days prior to this season's UEFA Europa League final, to be played at the Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday 15 May. Benfica (for administrative purposes the 'home' team in Amsterdam) will hold their media open day on Wednesday 8 May at the Caixa training ground in Seixal. The day will start at 15.15 (local time) with a press conference attended by coach Jorge Jesus. A mixed zone with players will then be held at 16.00, followed by a fully open training session at 17.00. Media wishing to attend are not required to register in advance but should show a media ID upon arrival. Chelsea will hold their media open day on Thursday 9 May at: Chelsea FC Training Ground, 60-64 Stoke Road, Stoke D'Abernon, Cobham, Surrey KT11 3PT. The day will kick off with a fully open training session at 11.00, followed by a mixed zone with players. Manager Rafael Benítez will then hold a press conference at 13.30. Media wishing to attend are not required to register in advance but should show a media ID upon arrival. Final week The two clubs have also announced their pre-match media activity at the Amsterdam ArenA on Tuesday 14 May. Benfica will hold their press conference at 17.15CET, followed by a fully open training session (18.00–19.00). Chelsea's press conference is at 19.00, followed by a fully open training session (19.30–20.30). Media activities taking place at the Amsterdam ArenA are accessible only to media accredited to the UEFA Europa League final. All times are local time. UK and Portuguese time is CET-1.

Double success gives Varga reason to smile

Both club and country gave Atila Varga the chance to enjoy his Sunday. After helping Slovakia win their first ever UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals game under the sun in Dubnica nad Vahom, the Juventus defender's day was given added shine when he received word from Italy that the Bianconeri had also secured victory, and with it, the Scudetto. "I was on the phone to my team-mates. They were celebrating in the city. I was celebrating with the boys in Slovakia. I was twice as happy as my team-mates here and in Turin," the unassuming 17-year-old centre-back, who underpinned the 1-0 Group A success against Austria, told UEFA.com. "I really enjoyed the game. We believed we would score right up to the last minute, and that is what we achieved." Born in the eastern Slovak town of Trebisov, Varga's first footsteps in football were made at nearby MFK Zemplín Michalovce. Spotted by Juventus, the next leap in the defender's career initially proved more testing for the young man, who like his compatriot, SSC Napoli's Marek Hamšík, has sought to further his career in the land of calcio. "I am satisfied there. The management, the coaching staff, everybody behaves very professionally. I am really enjoying my time at Juventus," said Varga, who names Slovakia's senior captain Martin Škrtel and a former Serie A star, Brazilian Thiago Silva, as his role models. "It was difficult at the beginning, to leave home at the age of 16, not speaking the language, but now it is easier. I can speak Italian, I have made friends there and got used to life in Italy as well. Sometimes, of course, I miss my family, but that is the life of a professional footballer. You have to adapt to conditions abroad." Given his assured display against Austria, it is perhaps little surprise Varga has found his feet in Italy. A member of the Allievi Nazionali squad, the teenager sees his future mapped out in black and white, particularly with Paul Pogba, three years Varga's senior, proving young talent will be allowed to shine at Juve. "I train with the first team from time to time. Pogba is a great, talented guy. All the players in the first team support us a lot, and of course, seeing players like Pogba playing for the first team gives me hope that if I work hard and do my best, I have a decent chance to make it to the first team. It is encouraging."
